A trip to our beautiful province to work with skilled Canadian whitetail outfitters is an incredible way to spend your vacation and go somewhere new while you encounter incredible game.
But it’s not all about getting a trophy! When you get settled into the woods, rifle or bow in hand, you become a part of something bigger than your experience in the moment. Your next steps shape the future of the land and the local deer population, too.
In this article, we’ll explore why ethical whitetail hunting in Saskatchewan matters – respecting the land, contributing to wildlife conservation, and responsibly managing the population – and how when you join a trip with Elusive, you’re helping to keep the wild, well, wild.
Responsible deer management for a thriving whitetail herd
If you aim to tag a trophy, you want to work with an outfitter that prioritizes wildlife conservation efforts and engages in selective harvesting.
When hunters in a region focus on mature deer (which means animals that have grown to their prime body size, muscle mass, and, in the case of bucks, antlers!), they prevent the population from depleting. Not only can ongoing hunting continue in that area, but the animals can also live full, natural lives before being harvested.
At Elusive, we have a strict deer management program that centers sustainable hunting principles. Our motto is “Let them go and let them grow!” To prevent the smaller game from being shot, we impose a $1000 penalty for anything under 140 inches so our clients can continue accessing trophy monster whitetail deer for years.
We also prevent putting too much pressure on the local population. Overharvesting changes the land—and not for the better. So even though 42 tags are available each season, we only invite a maximum of 36 hunters to set foot on this ground. We want to give the animals the chance to move naturally, mature and keep the herd strong year after year.
Providing the nutrition deer need to grow and thrive
A strong whitetail herd starts with proper nutrition. That’s why we provide high-protein feed that supports their health year-round. By introducing alfalfa, peas, and oats through this
program, the animals have the necessary nutrients to stay full, grow strong, and make it through harsh seasons. A well-fed herd is a resilient one, with better body condition, higher survival rates, and, for bucks, the ability to produce impressive antlers over time.
(In our gallery, you can see the types of mature whitetail that Elusive’s guests have tagged! These remarkable trophies are a direct result of our commitment to responsible management.)
Beyond just growing big bucks, this feed program supports the overall balance of the ecosystem. Sustainable hunting in Canada involves providing deer steady access to quality forage. That way, they don’t overbrowse natural food sources, which helps maintain a healthier habitat for all wildlife in the area. It’s a simple approach with a big impact—giving the animals what they need to thrive while keeping the land in good shape for future generations.
Habitat management to support healthy ecosystems
Maintaining the land to support a healthy, sustainable whitetail population is another key component of conservation-focused hunting. For most of the year, deer should feel safe and be able to live undisturbed with minimal interference from humans. They should be able to move, feed, and reproduce naturally. Our Elusive team takes several steps to achieve this goal and prevent hurting the population in our area. Besides closely with the local trapper to keep predators under control without impacting the whitetails, we’re in constant communication with the forestry harvesting companies we employ when trees need to be removed. While other outfitters often leave them to their work and don’t engage, we collaborate to save the wildlife areas and the deer’s habitat and wintering zones so they can continue to live and sustain their quality of life.
Embracing fair chase hunting principles to uphold respect
A fair chase hunting outfitter lets you engage in real hunting, how it was meant to be. They empower you to harvest whitetail deer in a way that protects and sustains the population, that’s as ethical as it is rewarding.
On our 80,000-acre grounds, the deer roam freely, moving on their own terms and following their own instincts. We don’t control them, and we wouldn’t want to. Some days, you might catch a glimpse of a big buck slipping through the timber. Other days, the wind shifts, and he vanishes before you even raise your rifle.
That’s fair chase. At Elusive, no high fences keep deer in, and no artificial setups tip the odds in your favor. Here, you’re stepping into their world—not the other way around. We encourage a focus on skill, patience, and respect, so we don’t rely on traps, enclosures, or shortcuts. The deer have every chance to slip away, just as nature intended.
Focused on skill and safety for a humane hunt
At every stage of the process, you should aim to respect the animals and prevent them from experiencing unnecessary pain.
Handling a rifle is a big responsibility! Many of our guests have deep knowledge of ethical hunting practices and the deer’s anatomy, helping them aim so that they swiftly kill to minimize suffering. However, we make sure to help out newcomers by providing pointers on where to shoot. We also offer a gun range to our guests, where you can practice on honing their skills to achieve ethical shot placement.
Gun safety is important to us, as well as following any relevant hunting regulations for Canada or Saskatchewan specifically. We always encourage careful handling and sight-in rifles when you arrive, just in case they experience any damage during your travels. Everything we do is about avoiding wounding the animals, and you, too! (Another way we prioritize your safety? Our supply list outlines the appropriate outerwear for staying warm, dry, comfortable, and visible to others in the forest.)
Experience responsible hunting with Elusive
Not all hunting is the same. There’s a big difference between setting up in a tree stand or ground blind and then waiting for the right moment to take a responsible shot or engaging in methods that removes all challenges from the experience.
Every time you step into the woods, your choices matter. Passing up an immature buck, making a clean shot, and supporting responsible outfitters who prioritize responsible wildlife management all contribute to the long-term health of the herd and the land they roam.
When you join one of our guided trips at Elusive, you’ll work with experienced guides who love the animals in this place they call home. We’re here to give you the complete package – cozy accommodation and logistics handled for you – while also treating the environment around us with care.
